Free Software for Everyone

Since Microsoft has tied up with all PC manufacturers to sell their PCs with pre-installed windows, most of us are familiar with Windows and proprietary software run on it, not many are aware of free software is now available for any task you want to do.

I am using Linux (Ubuntu) on Intel celeron N2840 notebook, which I had bought it a few years ago at the price of less than US$210, and I have no problem of using it for office tasks, video editing and software development, this is one of the great benefit once you are Linux user, it's not necessary to buy expensive notebook.

Below are the lists of free software I am using, and I think it is worth recommending, you can download and try it by clicking the software website link provided.

Linux is good enough to replace Windows:
Most Linux distributions looks similar to Windows and Mac operating systems, and support most same types of software you are using before, such as word processors, photo video editors, and so on.
Linux is a lot more secure, faster in speed and run smooth on low specs or older computers.
To try out Linux, you can run a Linux system from a USB drive without making any changes to your computer, or you can install Linux alongside with Windows (Dual boot, 2 OS on a computer).

Ubuntu is one of the most popular Linux distribution.

Linux Mint

Linux Mint is another Linux distribution based on Ubuntu or Debian, and support 32 bit old PCs.

Ubuntu and Linux Mint are designed to be flexible, lightweight and simple.
For normal usage, they come pre-installed with lots of software like Firefox, LibreOffice, Gimp etc.
and you can install many free software by simply using the Software Center.

Free office suite includes Writer (word processing), Calc (spreadsheets), Impress (presentations), Draw (graphics), Base (databases) and Math (formula editing).
LibreOffice is compatible with Microsoft Office, the latest version can support most of the Microsoft office file formats from version 97 to 365.

VLC media player

A multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files, DVD and Audio CD, if you are using windows media player and got problem to play your video files, try to use VLC player, its support most of the video codec.
It's also available on Android, iOS and Windows Phone.


Gimp is raster graphic editor used for image retouching and edition.
It's one of the best-known free alternatives to Photoshop on the market.


Krita is another popular free alternative to Photoshop, it's primarily for digital artists.


Blender is a 3D graphics-creation and video editing program, it was the software used in the making of Spider Man 2, I am not using this software as I not good at 3D modeling.


HandBrake is a tool for converting video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codecs.


Shotcut is a video editing software, it's easy to use and run smooth on low specs computers.
I am using this software to create my YouTube videos.


Musescore is a free score writer alternative to  Finale, Sibelius and Guitar Pro, it's support ukulele and guitar tabs.

FrontAccounting is a web-based accounting system alternative to Peachtree, QuickBooks, MYOB  accounting software, it's opensource, can be customized to suit the needs of your business.

It works great for all types of small businesses, cover almost every function and modules needed to form a fully reliable POS solution.
